The Indianapolis Star, part of Gannett Inc. and the USA TODAY NETWORK, has an immediate opening for a Content Coach with expertise in digital and print journalism as well as mobile, social media and video strategy, overseeing a team of 5-6 reporters with a core focus on Government, Politics and Business.
This is an essential editing position, made even more so because Indiana is the home to both Vice President Mike Pence and Democratic presidential candidate Pete Buttigieg. This editor will work with reporters responsible for covering state government -- Indianapolis is the capital of Indiana -- as well as Indianapolis municipal government coverage, business coverage and other topical beats, which may include transportation, health care and courts.
This position requires strong watchdog instincts -- a major expectation of this team is to provide high-impact watchdog journalism that holds elected officials and others in power accountable. Equally as important, this editor needs to work with reporters, visual journalists and digital strategists to ensure such work reaches the largest audience possible and effectively engages that audience.
You will be joining a newsroom with a reputation for producing significant award-winning journalism at the local, state and national level.It is also a newsroom that is collaborative and innovative.
The ideal candidate will have a track record of guiding innovative daily and enterprise stories and know how to balance the urgency of breaking news with planning for sophisticated storytelling.
Emphasize front-end editing on every story.
Make daily content decisions based on news judgment, reporter input and insights from audience metrics.
Guide the newsroom in ensuring a steady flow of high-quality content to provide the right elements on the right platforms at the right time.
Coordinate and supervise coverage of major breaking news events.
Lead team discussions to identify projects that serve readers.
Uphold the highest journalism standards across digital and print platforms.
Increase journalistic quality and storytelling across all areas of coverage.
Oversee the programming, production, packaging and promotion of newsroom content across various digital platforms, with an emphasis on mobile platforms.
·Bachelor's or master’s degree in Communications, Journalism, Marketing or related field preferred or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
·Five years of media management experience.
·Command of media law and principles of ethical conduct.
·Proven proficiency in applying analytics to content strategy.
·Must embrace peer-to-peer training, as a both a teacher and student.
·Experience with advanced storytelling techniques on multiple platforms.
·Strong line-editing skills.
·Exceptional planning and organizational skills.
·Understanding use of metrics, social-media and SEO knowledge.
·Self-motivation and self-direction.
·Strong grasp of journalism skills (reporting and editing) and advanced knowledge of writing, spelling, grammar, AP and local style.
·Able to multi-task and excel under intense deadline pressure in a rapidly changing environment.
·Applies innovative, creative thinking to support the company’s goals.
·News often requires employees to work extended hours, evenings, weekends and holidays, sometimes unexpectedly.
A valid drivers license, reliable transportation with liability insurance may be required for this position.
