Zócalo Public Square, the innovative blend of live programs and ideas journalism, seeks a creative, experienced, ambitious, and dynamic Associate Editor.
Zócalo connects people to ideas and to each other by examining essential questions in an accessible, broad-minded, and generous spirit. We pursue this mission by publishing ideas journalism and presenting free live events from Los Angeles to Honolulu and Washington, D.C. to Berlin. We co-publish an ongoing series of articles on American history and identity with the Smithsonian Institution. Our journalism is syndicated to more than 290 media outlets globally, from USA Today to the Singapore Straits Times.
Our ideal candidate values big ideas over hot takes, has a wide-ranging intellectual curiosity and a philosophical bent, and thinks for him or herself. We are looking for someone who possesses the editing and organizational skills to frame and translate ideas into essays for a broad audience as well as the finesse to communicate with our diverse range of contributors—academics, journalists, as well as non-professional writers.
The Associate Editor will be responsible for shepherding essays through our editorial process—from conceptualizing and assigning pieces to editing and copyediting to writing headlines and overseeing our homepage. Candidates should have an eye for good images and design as well as knack for content management systems such as WordPress.
The Associate Editor will also help to write and edit event descriptions, write event takeaways, do interviews, and other related content. This job requires a person who thrives on paying attention to details and working collaboratively. Previous experience editing books, magazines, book reviews, or Sunday opinion style articles is highly desirable. We’re really looking for excellence, energy, and a willingness to learn: if you have a strong background outside of journalism, please do not hesitate to apply.
The Associate Editor will work closely with the Editor-in-Chief. This is a great opportunity for a creative and entrepreneurial editor to become part of a thriving non-profit organization and a close-knit team. There is room to grow, innovate, and take on new responsibilities here. The Associate Editor must be able to work out of Zócalo’s offices in downtown Los Angeles, and commit to long hours, occasional weekend and evening work when there are events, and some domestic and international travel.
Pay and benefits are competitive. Zócalo is an ASU Knowledge Enterprise and this editor will be employed by Arizona State University and eligible to participate in a full range of benefits, including health care and retirement.
Interested applicants should send cover letter, resume, and writing and/or editing samples to email@example.com. The interview process includes an editing and headline test. Please include “Associate Editor” in the email subject line.
