NM Political Report Reproductive Justice Reporter

With the guidance of an editor, reports and writes stories related to reproductive justice, including reproductive rights, sexual health and abortion access with a focus on New Mexico. This job is grant-funded and would be for six months with the possibility of extension to a full year.
Duties and Responsibilities
Receives assignments from editor or pitches stories based on news tips to report 1-2 stories each week.
Researches and analyzes information related to story ideas, including with public records requests, interviews and research of records.
Writes regular newsletter of reproductive justice stories.
Revises work to meet editorial approval.
Provides publication-quality photographs to run alongside stories.
Aids in group-editing of colleagues’ stories.
Completes assignments in a timely matter, on an agreed-upon deadline.
Makes media appearances on television or radio programs to discuss and promote stories.
May work during non-traditional hours to complete stories.
Must abide by the Society for Professional Journalists Code of Ethics.
Minimum Job Requirements
Three or more years of work experience in journalism, including familiarity with reproductive justice issues. Must reside or be willing to relocate to New Mexico.
Knowledge of journalism principles and techniques.
Familiarity with Wordpress or a similar CMS.
Be able to develop own story ideas and sources.
Experience writing longform features desirable.
Basic familiarity with Google Docs.
Familiarity with filing Inspection of Public Records Act requests, or similar open records requests.
In-state travel may be required. Must have reliable personal transportation.
No or very limited exposure to physical risk.
Work will include significant travel and reporting outside an office.
