Description:

The Greenwood Commonwealth has an opening for a general assignment reporter who wants to join a news staff that is bucking the trends and still publishing a daily newspaper.

You'll cover everything that makes a community tick -- local government, politics, education,  plus enterprise work and features. Both soft news and hard news.

The Commonwealth publishes Tuesday through Saturday mornings and complements its print publication with a website (www.gwcommonwealth.com) that is growing rapidly in readership. It also publishes a general-interest quarterly magazine, Leflore Illustrated, for which you will write as well.

Greenwood is located in the heart of the Mississippi Delta, a fascinating area for journalism with its complex civil rights history as well as a rich and varied culture. It is farm country, but among its major employers are also Milwaukee Tool and Viking Range. It's a welcoming place for newcomers and has a low cost of living.

Although we would prefer a candidate with at least a year's experience in a daily or weekly newsroom, we're also open to new college graduates, including those who have not studied journalism but can write well and are intellectually curious. We will provide lots of good coaching.

Fringe benefits include health insurance, 401(k) pension plan, life insurance, two weeks of paid vacation and up to one week of sick leave.

Please send resume to Editor Tim Kalich at tkalich@gwcommonwealth.com.

When applying, mention you saw this opening listed at JournalismJobs.com.
