VFW Vacancy: Associate Director of Communications and Public Affairs

The Veterans of Foreign Wars is seeking a multi-talented communications professional to work fulltime in its Capitol Hill office. Main focus is to help ensure Congress and the Administration properly take care of veterans, service members and their families. Position promotes VFW National legislative objectives, veterans’ service, and troop and family support programs, as well as the extraordinary achievements and best practices of VFW members and Posts via the press, in the VFW magazine, and through social media. Position requires strong written, verbal, photo/video skills. Duties include writing news and feature articles for VFW magazine and VFW.org, position papers, editing congressional testimony, and live-streaming, tweeting, and other assigned activities. Candidate must be VFW member-eligible, as well as possess a bachelor’s degree in journalism, public relations, mass communications or related field, plus a minimum of four years of public affairs or government relations experience. There are three qualifiers for membership in the VFW, as set out in our By-Laws. An individual must meet all three in order to become a member. They are as follows:

1: Citizenship – must be a U.S. citizen or U.S. National.

2: Honorable Service – must have served in the Armed Forces of the United States and either received a discharge of Honorable or General (Under Honorable Conditions) or be currently serving.

3: Service in a war, campaign, or expedition on foreign soil or in hostile waters*. This can be proven by any of the following:

- An authorized campaign medal 
- Receipt of Hostile Fire Pay or Imminent Danger Pay (verified by a military pay statement)
- Service in Korea for 30 consecutive or 60 non-consecutive days
