The successful candidate will help the Editor-in-Chief lead a group of topnotch young reporters, bring enthusiasm to local journalism and make stories and headlines sing. He or she will do some reporting as well. This is a great community-journalism job in one of the most beautiful places in the nation. The Express—recognized in 2018 by the National Newspaper Association as the No. 1 large, non-daily newspaper in the country—has a strong tradition of providing award-winning news and arts coverage. It won first place for General Best Local News Coverage among all large dailies and non-dailies in the NNA's 2018 Better Newspapers Contest. The newspaper has been honored numerous times by the Idaho Press Club as the best non-daily in the state.
The successful candidate should have at least 3 years of experience in increasingly responsible positions as a government reporter, copy editor or editor; and college degree. A solid understanding of AP style and an eye for features, in-depth reporting, good photography and digital delivery are essential. The position is a full-time (40 hours a week) role that demands a variety of skills. Candidates must have strong news instincts, the inclination to dig for information, an ability to write and inspire clean, accurate copy. The position also requires strong organizational skills and efficiency while working on tight deadlines.
