Starnes Media is a full-service media and marketing company. We serve communities with award-winning community journalism and reach targeted markets for small- and medium-sized businesses.
For more than 10 years, we have reached hundreds of thousands of readers monthly and filled a void in the local journalism landscape.
Starnes Media is looking for a managing editor to oversee the editorial operation, which includes seven monthly publications as well as several niche magazines. Effectiveness is measured not only by high-quality, on-time publications but also in the development of others.

What you need
What you will do
Manage a team of journalists, photographers and work closely with the design team
Manage all deadlines for the company. Make sure the team meets them.
Manage freelance writers.
Top-level edits. Quality assurance.
Copyediting as needed.
Maintain and uplevel team through hiring and firing as needed
Manage budget and report on the profitability of papers
Skills and Knowledge
Exceptional time-management, organizational and team-building skills
Ability to develop big-picture goals while creating/delegating/managing day-to-day tasks that build toward big goals
Ability to plug into communities to understand the needs and wants of our audiences
Ability to develop reliable contacts to discover story ideas
Strong editing skills; in-depth knowledge of current AP Style a must
Familiarity with Adobe CC programs (specifically Lightroom/Photoshop and InDesign)
Familiarity with photography equipment desired
Familiarity with Magazine Manager/Mirabel’s Digital Studio a plus
Understanding of print production and workflow requirements
Newspaper or magazine background
Previous leadership/managerial experience (experience effectively communicating team goals, assigning/delegating work, ensuring execution, tracking team progress, assisting others when needed, providing motivation and camaraderie, providing regular feedback, developing colleagues’ skills/strengths)
Previous experience with recruiting and developing talent
