Director of Membership, Sales & Marketing
The Director of Membership, Sales & Marketing is part of the executive management team at VTDigger and is responsible for overseeing and implementing effective membership, sales and marketing programs that support the journalism mission of VTDigger. The Director manages and is accountable for a team of specialists, including a Membership Coordinator, Underwriting Coordinator, and Digital Marketing and Inside Sales Specialist. The Director reports to the Executive Director of VTDigger.
Duties and Responsibilities
As part of the executive management team, the Director will work with the Executive Director and other senior leaders to create an open, respectful culture where every employee feels comfortable sharing ideas and opinions. The Director will guard against internal silos, champion collaboration, and encourage dialogue between employees within
and across teams. Finally, the Director will help create a culture where employees have personal ownership for VTDigger’s success and are encouraged to take responsibility, make decisions, fail without fear, and learn from mistakes.
The membership program is the main source of funding for VTDigger's operations. The Director will initiate strategies to improve email subscription rates through the development of a marketing funnel that results in membership conversion. To that end, the Director will work with staff to further develop and implement year-round, Spring Drive and Annual Fund initiatives that bolster monthly and one-time membership gifts through email and online marketing. In addition, the Director will evaluate systems and supervise the ongoing assessment of membership attainment. We are currently on track to raise $750,000 from 5,000 members this year. The goal is to raise more than $1 million a year from 7,500 members by 2021.
Underwriting sales is the second largest source of funding for VTDigger's operations. This is a B2B program that gives businesses a platform for promoting products and services on VTDigger email, mobile app and desktop website. The Director will initiate strategies to improve the underwriting program through better outreach, pipeline development and sales data reporting; new sales products and services; and targeted marketing to potential underwriters. We are currently on track to raise $600,000 from more than 100 underwriters this year. The goal is to raise more than $750,000 a year from underwriting by 2021.
VTDigger serves 320,000 readers a month (50% in-state; 50% out of state), or about 15,000 per day on average. Our goal is to increase the total number of average monthly readers to 400,000 by 2021. The Director will work with newsroom leadership to create a marketing campaign and initiate digital marketing tactics that further expand public awareness of the VTDigger brand and top of funnel markets for email subscribers, members, donors and businesses that could support VTDigger in the future. The goal is to increase the total number of average monthly readers to 400,000 by 2021, or about 22,000 per day on average.
