The Rock Hill Herald’s sports reporter/editor covers the most important college and high school sports news in our Upstate South Carolina coverage area and helps coordinate our freelance assignments and story planning.
The reporter/editor position calls for a versatile journalist with excellent news judgment for community journalism as well as planning and editing skills to help with freelancer assignments. This is a job for someone who loves being visible in the community and is strong at building sources and relationships with coaches, parents and young athletes. That source network will be critical to breaking news on this beat. In addition to high school sports, we also cover local college sports and some recreational activities.
Rock Hill is less than 30 minutes south of Charlotte, and the community is gearing up for the Carolina Panthers to move their headquarters/practice facility from uptown Charlotte to the I-77 corridor in Rock Hill. That transition and its impact on the local community will also at times be the reporter/editor’s responsibility, coordinating with beat reporters in our newsroom and at our sister paper, The Charlotte Observer.
The sports reporter/editor will use social media as a news-gathering tool, an engagement opportunity and a means to put our news and enterprise work on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook and other platforms.
