The night editor will be responsible for the final layout of the news pages of The News Sun, The Star and The Herald Republican, as well as writing accurate and eye-catching headlines and photo captions. The position will also entail proofreading, with occasional sub-editing. There is also the expectation that the Night Editor will monitor and write, as necessary, breaking news during the evening shift for the company’s news websites that will miss the print editions, and to promote stories and engage with readers on social media throughout the evening shift.
With a high degree of responsibility in supervising the final layout and edit of the pages, the successful candidate will be detail-oriented, have excellent news judgment and experience working in a fast-paced, daily newsroom setting. This person has the authority to make last-minute changes to print editions for critical, breaking local news.
The candidate should be proficient at using Adobe InDesign and have experience in newspaper design, layout and copy-editing. The ability to juggle multiple tasks and complete them both quickly and accurately is essential. Knowledge of TownNews BLOX is a plus.
The position is five days a week, Monday to Friday; the shift will run from 2 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. The night editor will also have to work some Saturday night shifts in rotation with other editors. The salary is competitive and will be based on experience.
•Monitoring press deadlines and design discrepancies with Press and Composing Dept.
•Coordinating with editors and other evening newsroom staff on long-range planning and production, at the direction of the Managing Editor.
•Assisting on social media response and breaking news, along with other evening newsroom staff.
• Experience in newsroom production and page layout using Adobe InDesign
• A minimum of three years of professional newsroom experience at a fast-pace.
• A strong understanding of news writing, journalistic integrity and story structure
• Copy-editing skills
• Attention to detail
• Ability to work to tight deadlines with a quick turnaround
• Strong social media skills and aptitude.
