Looking to launch your career in journalism?
You can go to work for one of those corporate newspapers where you will be put on a beat like following up on the police blotter; OR, you can go to work with one of our family owned community newspapers. With us you will be immersed in news gathering and reporting. You will be the primary reporter in one of our communities covering city council, school board, high school sports, local events, and local celebrities. You will develop a portfolio of stories across the spectrum and learn about your own personal reporting strengths.
Your work with our little company will teach you about the future of the newspaper business. We are a web-first publishing company. This means we are no longer a weekly paper. We are bridging the change from print to web. Contrary to the theme that the Internet will kill newspapers we believe the Internet is the best thing that ever happened to community newspapers like ours. It is true that our weekly printed products are declining in readership, but our paid online subscribers grew by 41% past year. Why? Because our websites have the ability to tell the story in much more robust ways and to do it immediately. Important breaking news stories can be up in hours not days with multiple photos even video. This allows us to compete with the daily down the road but also with TV and radio.
Qualified applicants need to have good writing skills including the ability to put stories together quickly following the time honored who, what, where when and why. Typing, spelling and comfort with a camera and a computer are required. Good interview skills complete your package. We are not a fake news organization. Our company has a close personal relationship with the communities we serve and believe our job is to accurately inform the community on the issues of importance.
Our newspapers are located in the foothills on the Eastern side of the Cascade Mountains in Washington state. We enjoy four seasons and the economy is built on agriculture and tourism. The area is promoted as Washington's Playground for its recreational opportunities. You can experience the life of the community and the quality of our publications on any of our websites - Leavenworth , Chelan , Cashmere
