There may be no better government/politics job in the country
The Bay Area News Group and Southern California News Group have an opening for one of the news organizations' premier beats: state government and politics reporter in our Sacramento bureau.
This is a big beat for a self-starter who has the energy to be five places at once and the vision to find new ways to tell familiar stories. We're looking for a reporter with advanced digital and data skills, someone who is comfortable popping out a healthy diet of news and impromptu interviews with newsmakers one minute, then mining hidden gems from the seldom-watched corners of the Capitol the next.
You will be responsible for covering all aspects of the California state capital, with an emphasis on issues that are important to readers in the Bay Area and Southern California, such as the housing crisis, wildfires, digital privacy and regulation, universal healthcare and the big-ticket items and policies that will define Gov. Gavin Newsom's tenure. Based in Sacramento, the reporter will be our authority on state issues, producing stories and digital content that will appear in newspapers and websites throughout California and beyond.
Over the next year, you will also play a critical role in our coverage of one of the most important elections in history, helping our team on the California presidential primary, the battle for Congress and the direction of the Golden State. For that reason and others, we are anxious to fill this job quickly.
The successful candidate will have at least three years' experience covering government or a similar beat. Candidates must be well-versed in California's political landscape. Interested? Email your resume, five clips and a cover letter highlighting your vision for the job to email@example.com to convince us why you should be our next Sacramento reporter.
