The Texas Observer seeks a digital editor to oversee our thriving online presence.

We are a 65-year-old award-winning Texas institution that specializes in investigative longform journalism, daily news analysis, and must-read coverage of state politics and culture.

We’re looking for an editor with a minimum of 3 to 5 years of experience working in daily online journalism, who will take our independent, hell-raising journalism to the next level. You must have a passion for investigative reporting, comfort with a rigorous pace of editing, and an abiding interest in Observer beats, including criminal justice, the environment, public health, immigration and politics.

The digital editor assigns and edits web-only stories, from short daily items to in-depth investigations. This position requires someone capable of stewarding all aspects of editorial production, from story conception and line-editing to writing headlines. You will work with the other editors, as well as the reporting staff and freelancers, to ensure the website is a healthy mix of smart commentary, fearless reporting and timely news. The digital editor also coordinates with the engagement editor on social media promotion, newsletters and SEO.

You must be a mission-oriented professional with an ability to work quickly and independently.

Send your résumé, cover letter and no more than five links to clips of your writing and/or pieces you’ve edited to: jobs AT texasobserver.org. The deadline to apply is July 14.
