Race & Ethnicity Reporter
The Montgomery Advertiser/montgomeryadvertiser.com, part of the USA TODAY NETWORK, seeks a race and ethnicity reporter to explore how race impacts who we are, how we live together and the decisions we make as a community.
Race cuts through many aspects of American life, particularly in the South and particularly in Montgomery, the birthplace of the modern civil rights movement.
Race affects our criminal justice system, our neighborhoods, our business transactions and our culture. It’s systemic. As a news organization we need to look at, report on and document the causes, the effects and how we are changing as a community.
While race influences all beats in our newsroom, this reporter would be the lead enterprise reporter writing about the communities we are underserving in Montgomery and the issues we are underreporting, particularly within the African-American community.
The ideal reporter will be curious, motivated and thoughtful, looking to drive an open, sincere conversation about race. They will produce daily impact stories and longer enterprise pieces. They must produce solutions-oriented journalism as well, exposing what other communities have done to address ingrained disparities.
We are not a news organization to shy away from the subject. In the past year we have produced work gaining national attention exploring the issues, including an apology for our role in the lynching era, a story package that challenged the notion of a state holiday for the Confederate president’s birthday and a piece exposing the racist editorial rants of a west Alabama publisher. But we want to do more and need to do more.
The Advertiser is a three-time Pulitzer Prize winning news operation that has swept top awards from the Alabama Press Association and Associated Press Media Editors in the past several years. Our newsroom, which has maintained its size the past three years, continually produces stories earning national acclaim and recognition. We also are among the top three sites for page view growth within USA Today Network, which has more than 100 news sites.
Montgomery, Alabama’s state capital, lies along the banks of the Alabama River and is home to Maxwell Air Force Base, Hyundai Motors, the Alabama Shakespeare Festival and the Equal Justice Initiative’s Legacy Museum and National Memorial for Peace and Justice. Not only is Montgomery an epicenter of civil rights, it stands at the forefront of high technology as the first city in Alabama and the fourth in the Southeastern U.S. to launch an Internet Exchange tech hub. Montgomery is also home to a vibrant, growing downtown and diverse cultural offerings from music to professional baseball.
Montgomery is an evolving city, continually reflecting on its past while trying to figure out its future. It’s a good time to be here as a journalist – plenty of stories to cover and attention to gain. Come join our close-knit team and help us get even better.
