Description:

Watchdog Reporter

The Montgomery Advertiser/montgomeryadvertiser.compart of the USA TODAY NETWORK, seeks a watchdog reporter to cover public entities, particularly city government.

The reporter will be responsible for coverage that holds public officials accountable and helps readers make informed decisions about their community, from the spending of their tax dollars to the safety of their neighborhood.

The watchdog reporter must consistently gain/build trust with sources and demonstrate a keen eye for important details found in local government agendas, budgets and other public records. The reporter instinctively seeks documentation and data yet understands that the best stories are about people. The reporter also must recognize compelling, socially shareable stories and be quick to jump on them.

The reporter has to be a newshound, writer and videographer. They must understand the value of hard work. They need a competitive edge and must be self-driven toward success. We want a smart, ambitious, nice reporter who wants to contribute daily but is constantly seeking compelling long-term enterprise pieces and has the discipline and organization to pull off the stories.

The Advertiser is a three-time Pulitzer Prize winning news operation that has swept top awards from the Alabama Press Association and Associated Press Media Editors in the past several years. Montgomery, Alabama’s state capital, lies along the banks of the Alabama River and is home to Maxwell Air Force Base, Hyundai Motors, the Alabama Shakespeare Festival and the Equal Justice Initiative’s Legacy Museum and National Memorial for Peace and Justice. Not only is Montgomery at the epicenter of the civil rights movement, it stands at the forefront of high technology as the first city in Alabama and the fourth in the Southeastern U.S. to launch an Internet Exchange tech hub. Montgomery is also home to a vibrant, growing downtown and diverse cultural offerings from music to professional baseball.

Montgomery is an evolving city, continually reflecting on its past while trying to figure out its future. It’s a good time to be here as a journalist – plenty of stories to cover and attention to gain.
