The Skagit Valley Herald, a daily newspaper with Adams Publishing Group, seeks a dynamic, forward-focused assistant assignment editor to join us in leading a talented news team that is committed to solid, quality journalism across various platforms. Our team publishes not only a daily newspaper and digital product, but also two weekly publications and various special sections.
This assistant helps guide daily news coverage for the Skagit Valley Herald’s print and digital publications. As a team, our goal is to find the most significant and compelling stories of the Skagit Valley and deliver them in the multiple ways our readers choose to receive them. Traditional basics such as solid news judgment, good editing skills, top-notch organizational skills, superior problem-solving abilities, flexibility and general juggling mastery are required. But we need more than the basics. We want someone who is eager to pursue the opportunities that lie ahead and ready to capitalize on the fact that our audience reach has never been larger. We seek a detail-oriented person who honors deadlines but also plans ahead. This person has the mind of a professor and the heart of a coach. As such, the position involves close work with reporters and copy editors, so interpersonal skills are important. Our website and social media presence are among our editors’ shared responsibilities. This editor also serves as a pinch-hitter who will sometimes be called to design pages or report.
The picturesque Skagit Valley is a wonderful place to live and play, and this community cares deeply about its residents and strong news coverage. If you truly understand the pace and workload that journalists at small dailies face, then you may be a good fit. Please send a resume and cover letter as well as writing and design samples to Director of Content, Colette Weeks at email@example.com.
