Job Description


SUMMARY:  This position is responsible for proofreading news stories, special reports, and commentary. Editorial Specialist also checks citations and links for accuracy and adherence to strict print proofreading guidelines.  May also perform more complex tasks. Works under general supervision. 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned to meet editorial department objectives.

  1. Performs proofreading and light copyediting on in-house materials such as shells, summaries, news stories, special reports, etc. Checks for grammar, punctuation, clarity, style, and flow, ensuring conformity of format and style throughout.
  2. Ensures accuracy, completeness, and adherence to established formats. Follows company style manual and AP style.
  3. Checks magazine cites for accuracy.
  4. Proofreads in Content Management System, PDF, and hardcopy.
  5. May perform more complex tasks, including doing a weekly board read on the flagship magazine before publication.
  6. Proofreads IRS transcripts.
  7. Adheres to established deadlines.


  1. Proficient in use of style and grammar, with excellent attention to detail
  2. Solid writing skills
  3. Ability to quickly spot irregularities or errors in documents ready for final transmission
  4. Familiarity with form of style, such as AP
  5. Proofreads documents at a reasonable pace with a minimum of errors
  6. Good communication skills
  7. Demonstrated ability to handle multiple tasks while adhering to deadlines
  8. Motivated and well-organized
  9. Computer proficiency in Windows, Office, electronic databases, and web searching preferred
  10. Works well in a team environment
  11. Ability to meet strict daily and weekly deadlines, and adjust to changing priorities
  12. Demonstrated dependability through punctual attendance





High school diploma or GED; college degree in English, journalism, or a related field highly preferred

At least one year of proofreading or related editorial experience required
