Description:

Make Every Day More Interesting. For anyone who’s ever wondered why, Live Science makes every day a little more interesting by illuminating the fascinating world around us. We aim to empower and inspire our readers with the tools they need to understand the world and appreciate its everyday awe.

Job Purpose

Live Science is looking for a well-informed, sharp and hardworking editor to oversee our health section. You’ll be a health news junkie, with a shrewd ability to discern which discoveries and news items speak to a Live Science reader. You’ll need to be self-motivated to keep abreast of all the big (and some obscure) medical journals and the news of the day, creating interesting experiences for our readers. The best candidate will have an eye for emerging trends, be able to spot over-hyped and inaccurate coverage (and know when it’s worth debunking), and explain the health angle behind major news stories.

Alongside managing a team of full-time and freelance reporters, you will edit several stories a day and write a few stories a week on tight deadlines. As Editor you will have to make quick and thoughtful decisions on whether and how to cover sensitive subjects and breaking news, and take a step back to ensure the health vertical aligns with the rest of the website.

The Health Editor will be enthusiastically curious with terrific organizational skills and  a passion for disseminating compelling health news. You will also need to work well on a team with other editors and reporters.

Key role responsibilities:

  • Run the health section on Live Science, keeping the section current and compelling.
  • Manage and mentor 2 reporters.
  • Assign and edit health stories to reporters and freelancers.
  • Write 3-5 quick health news stories a week.
  • Keep abreast of all the big (and some obscure) medical journals, keeping up with emerging trends
  • Ensure the health section of the site is up to date and is driving traffic/revenue to the site.
  • Strategize for long-term growth of the section as it aligns with the overall goals of the site.

What do I need to succeed?

  • Several  years experience writing and editing consumer health stories.
  • Superb organizational skills
  • Journalism degree or equivalent
  • Strong editing, writing and communication skills
  • Knowledge of SEO online best practices and health/science background a plus
