Outreach Strategists, a Houston-based public affairs firm is looking for freelance journalists and journalism students with advanced reporting and writing skills who are interested or have experience in covering Texas politics and public policy.

Reporters will write pieces that aim to promote civic education and inform Texas’ citizens.

We are particularly interested in pieces that cover education finance, healthcare access, infrastructure and property tax issues, and are similar in tone and reporting at reputable news organizations in the Lone Star State such as the Texas Tribune, Texas Observer and The Dallas Morning News.

We prefer journalists who are based in Texas. We will also consider candidates who are no longer based in-state but have public affairs reporting experience in the Lone Star State.

We pay reporters for three types of pieces:

Timely summaries, analysis and round-ups of election results, legislation and news affecting Texas’ state senate and representative districts, based on aggregation, readily available statistics and online research.


$50 flat fee, word counts between 0 - 400 words

$75 flat fee, word count 401 - 600 words


Short reported stories that have no more than two sources and require  a few hours of online research. Sourcing for these pieces can involve phone calls or emails to get short statements.


$0.45/word, not to exceed $250 per piece.


In-depth reported stories that include scheduling and conducting extensive phone or onsite interviews with activists, lawmakers, government officials, lobbying representatives, etc.

Reporting would require onsite visits for later reporting, and more than two sources (actual human, not a website) for quotes or statements.


$0.65/word, not to exceed $350 per piece.
