Lansing-based non-profit association seeks staff writer with minimum two years professional experience in journalism or communications for legislative and municipal writing geared both toward association members and the public. Position will also oversee association’s legislative social media efforts, and host a biweekly podcast. Position requires strong writing skills, considerable experience in social media applications and utilization for public policy advocacy, interpersonal communication skills necessary to work effectively in a professional manner, research capabilities for in-depth articles, and organizational skills necessary to meet multiple deadlines.   • Writes articles (various lengths) on association’s legislative activities for weekly and monthly publications and/or website. Articles will identify issues being addressed by the legislature, courts and executive branch impacting association members, identifying implications to members and to advance the association’s legislative goals relative to current issues. Such articles will explain legislation in-depth, exploring the background and impact of bills and the direction for members on advocacy engagement.
  • Writes in-depth magazine cover stories on emerging social, economic, environmental, political and legislative issues and trends impacting association and its members. Author articles profiling lawmakers, features highlighting member accomplishments, human interest pieces, and other assignments, as directed.  
  • Hosts bi-monthly podcast, including brainstorming and scheduling topics and interviewing appropriate experts.
  • Composes press releases, media statements and op-ed pieces for submittal to appropriate media outlets.
  • Posts legislative advocacy and other information is posted on MTA website.
  • Edits and proofreads materials that will be disseminated to the membership, the public or other significant audiences, as assigned.
  • Attends legislative committee meetings for research and social media purposes. 
  • Posts relevant advocacy and association information to social media platforms, including live-tweeting committee meetings and other events.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.



  • Knowledge normally acquired through the completion of a bachelor’s degree in a discipline such as communications, journalism or public relations, which focuses on written communications.
  • Minimum of two years professional experience in journalism or communications.
  • Demonstration of strong writing skills, particularly the ability to present complex information in a style and vocabulary suitable for general audiences; strong grammar and spelling abilities essential.
  • Considerable experience in social media applications and utilization for public policy advocacy
  • Interpersonal communication skills necessary to work effectively with other staff members in a professional manner.
  • Ability to conduct training courses in areas related to social media and communications.
  • Organizational skills necessary to meet numerous deadlines and the ability to successfully carry out multiple responsibilities.
