The Communications Specialist supports the Greater Chicago Food Depository’s mission by raising awareness of hunger in our community and inspiring the public to take action. As a member of the Marketing and Volunteer Engagement Team, the Communications Specialist will write stories and other content for the Food Depository’s website, record and edit video, assist with media relations, and support communications needs of the organization. The Communications Specialist will also help tell the Food Depository’s story on social media platforms, such as Instagram, Twitter and Facebook.  


  • Identify and craft inspiring stories about the Food Depository’s impact and its stakeholders, including clients, partner agencies, volunteers, donors, advocates and staff.
  • Write content for quarterly publications, websites, blog posts, social media, internal communications and other marketing materials.
  • Shoot and edit video content for use on the Food Depository’s YouTube and social media channels.
  • Support the Food Depository’s media relations strategy by developing and pitching stories to local broadcast, print and radio contacts. Also respond to select media inquiries.
  • Write press releases, talking points, executive briefs and event scripts.
  • Serve as an organizational photographer on occasion.
  • Schedule and lead Food Depository facility tours.
  • Assist at special events, including the annual Hunger Walk, Chicago Commercial Real Estate Awards Dinner, Canstruction and more.
  • Manage daily media monitoring and track trends in coverage of the Food Depository and the hunger issue.


  • Four-year college degree in Journalism, Communications, English or a related field.
  • 1-3 years of full-time experience in a public relations, communications or news writing role for an organization, agency or publication.
  • Steadfast belief that no one should go hungry and compassion for those who do.
  • Strong writing skills and a desire to grow as a storyteller.
  • Ability to gather and tell stories with empathy, integrity and ethics.
  • Willingness to accept feedback and work in a collaborative environment.
  • Proficiency in AP style.
  • Experience in video storytelling, including video editing using Adobe Premiere Pro.
  • Experience writing press releases, talking points and speeches for a nonprofit organization or company.
  • Ability to multi-task and manage multiple projects on tight deadlines.
  • Familiarity with Cook County and the city of Chicago a plus.
  • Occasional evening and weekend work required.
  • Driver’s license and a personal vehicle required.
  • Fluency in Spanish a plus.
