Description:

The San Diego Union-Tribune is seeking a reporter for its Watchdog team. We want reporters who pursue accountability journalism in a way that’s fair to all involved. Since its launch in 2010, our team has sparked reforms and spurred criminal inquiries, charges and convictions. Our central inquiry is, "Are San Diego County institutions, and people in positions of trust, living up to their duties, their promises, the law and the expectations of the public?"  This reporter should have skills to gather, analyze and present data in ways that have community impact and engage readers. This reporter will work with highly productive colleagues on the investigative and digital teams to tell stories in multiple formats. The main qualifications are curiosity, energy, a critical mind and the ability to produce quality journalism.

Responsibilities include:

  • Researching and writing for multiple platforms (print, online, mobile) producing stories, blog posts or tweets

  • Writing and filing reports or visual elements from news events using a mobile device

  • Interacting with readers and responding appropriately to their comments

  • Working with other reporters and editors to support larger enterprise news pieces

Requirements/qualifications include:

  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism and three years of writing experience for community, online or regional news entities in a professional capacity

  • Solid grasp of proper grammar, spelling, punctuation and AP style

  • Knowledge of libel laws and adherence to the Union-Tribune’s ethics guidelines

Send a resume, work samples and cover letter telling us how you would approach the beat to sdut.jobs@gmail.com. Please include “watchdog” in the subject line for proper routing.
