Area Function

The Communications Department supports the work and ministry of the Episcopal Church by amplifying and sharing the stories of the Episcopal Church around the globe.  The Department accomplishes this work through effective and efficient strategies and channels of digital evangelism, public and media relations and reporting, internal communications, crisis communications, graphic design, video and webcast production and distribution, language services, and production of sponsorship and publicity campaigns.

Episcopal News Service offers in-depth reporting and analysis of local, regional, national and international news for Episcopalians and others interested in the church’s mission and ministry. Providing written and multimedia coverage, Episcopal News Service is the officially sponsored online news source of the Episcopal Church.

Job Summary

The Reporter/Assistant Editor writes news and feature stories, covers events and supports and facilitates all aspects of content creation and online publishing for Episcopal News Service. The Reporter/Assistant Editor assists with proofreading copy and posting content using ENS’ content management system.

Reporting Relationships

The position reports to the Managing Editor.

Duties & Essential Job Functions

  • Writes, copyedits, proofreads and prepares content, as assigned by the managing editor, prior to publishing.
  • Routinely scans secular media and diocesan websites for news of interest to the ENS audience.  
  • Regularly utilizes social media for content distribution and audience engagement.
  • Prepares photos using Photoshop or other editing software and publishes content via WordPress.
  • Works closely with the editors and freelancers to ensure news and all other content is disseminated accurately and in a timely manner. 
  • Maintains regular contact with diocesan communicators to ensure local and churchwide news is delivered according to ENS editorial guidelines and style.
  • Helps explore opportunities for building audience and reaching a wider demographic of readers, both inside and outside the church. 

Other Functions And Responsibilities

  1. The principal duties above are to be carried out in the context of keeping the focus on the Jesus Movement: the message of God’s loving, liberating, and life-giving sharing of Jesus Christ with the world.
  2. Must be able and willing to travel (approximately 10% of the time)
  3. Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Required

  • A bachelor’s degree in journalism, English or communications with at least three to five years’ experience in the field of daily journalism.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collegially and constructively.
  • Able to learn and stay current with news and digital communications functions.
  • Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills: must be self-motivated, detail-oriented, able to work both independently and as part of a team, manage large and diverse workload under pressure.
  • Ability to exercise independent judgement and discretion.
  • Demonstrated skill working with content management systems, especially WordPress, and Photoshop, and Microsoft Office applications.
  • Advanced understanding of social media, particularly FaceBook and Twitter, and its functions and benefits in telling the church’s stories.

Preferred

  • Previous copy editing experience.
  • Possess an in-depth working knowledge of the Episcopal Church, its history and traditions.
  • Experience in multimedia production and video editing.
  • Limited working proficiency in Spanish.

Physical Requirements/Work Environment

Must be willing and able to work in a broad range of office and field conditions, transporting computer and camera equipment in the field, and to travel, including to foreign countries.
