The Monitor in McAllen, Texas is seeking to employ a full-time crime reporter to join our team of journalists covering South Texas’ Rio Grande Valley. Applicants should be self-starters who are passionate about public safety, courts and breaking news reporting from a community journalism perspective. This individual may also work as a general assignments reporter when needed.

Journalists experienced in deadline writing, covering late-breaking stories and enterprise journalism, and who have a general understanding of law enforcement agencies, district attorneys’ offices, courtroom reporting and local governments are encouraged to apply. A bachelor’s degree in journalism is preferred but not required, as two to five (2-5) years of experience in other newsrooms will also be considered.

The crime reporter will be expected to cover crime and courts in a region that spans 26 cities in Hidalgo County and Starr County. Range of coverage also includes features and policy as well as enterprise stories in addition to hard news.

To enhance the reporter’s stories, additional responsibilities may include assisting in the preparation of video and audio elements for multimedia packages. Expertise in web and social media news development and management is also preferred.
