Social Media Strategist

General Summary

The Bay Area News Group, which includes The Mercury News and East Bay Times, is located in one of America’s most lively, interesting, beautiful and challenging metropolitan areas. We are looking for a social media strategist who can lead our effort to identify, create and curate content across social platforms in ways that grows and more deeply engages our audience. Experience with social storytelling is a must, as is a thorough knowledge of social media best practices, tools, analytics and partners relevant for a media company. Prior experience in a newsroom is a definite plus.

Roles & Responsibilities

  • Has overall responsibility for our social media strategy and execution, including training members of the staff on best practices.

  • Takes the lead in creating and curating social content on BANG’s company pages and accounts to increase our social audience and encourage deeper engagement that leads to digital subscriptions.

  • Works with teams and individuals across the newsroom to develop social strategies around specific stories or topics, including live events and our most significant enterprise efforts.

  • Uses social analytics and tools to listen to our audience and identify breaking and trending news and social and content programming opportunities.

  • Works with Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, Reddit and others to stay on top of social trends and tools and help newsroom leadership determine where to focus our energy to produce the greatest return.

  • Assists with our growing email newsletter and digital subscription efforts, as well as training on SEO and other digital skills.


  • Education: Any combination of education, training and experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the duties and responsibilities as described.

  • Demonstrates strong interpersonal, critical-thinking and problem-solving skills and an ability to work with people at all levels and across departments and divisions.

  • Communicates effectively in both oral and written form.

Special requirements

  • Must be able to work a flexible schedule, including weekends and evenings, as required.

  • Physical considerations: This job involves using a computer and mobile devices, and related peripherals.

  • Ability to work on deadline in a 24/7 news environment in one of the nation’s most competitive media markets. Speed of performance and accuracy is crucial.

  • Creativity in both conceptualizing social stories and projects and executing them.

  • Ability to sustain interest and motivation and work with individuals with a range of knowledge and initiative.

  • Ability to develop and execute projects in a timely fashion with little or no supervision.

  • Self-starting and self-monitoring.
