InsideClimate News is looking for a talented reporter who can write fast and with authority about climate change and energy issues for our news site and social media.

This is an entry-level position based in New York City. It is an exciting opportunity to work closely with an award-winning team of journalists and develop expertise in one of the hottest, most important topics of our time.

We see this as a key position to complement our investigative work as climate change emerges as a defining issue in the national political conversation. We're looking for an ambitious self-starter, someone who is hungry to create buzz and react to it, who wakes up eager to find out what happened and what's next. This reporter must feel comfortable writing short but incisive news stories daily, while juggling social media engagement and other work.

The ideal candidate has a proven ability to work independently, manage multiple tasks with accuracy, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment. You must prize accuracy, rigor and attention to detail and have a keen interest in climate change, energy and environmental justice issues and a passion for the kind of hard-hitting public interest journalism ICN delivers.

You will:

  • Report and write several stories a week on a variety of climate-related subjects.

  • Write and produce our morning newsletter, Today's Climate.

  • Maintain our social media presence, bringing creative and strategic thinking and clear and compelling writing to our Twitter, Facebook and other social media platforms.

  • Work with ICN's editors and reporters to come up with ways to best promote our work on social media.

  • Attend weekly editorial meetings.

  • At least 1-2 years of full-time or internship experience in journalism.

  • Understanding of the social web and experience crafting engaging, professional social media posts.

  • Experience using content management systems.

  • A passion for developing and experimenting with new ideas.

  • Superlative people skills and a collaborative nature.

  • Knowledge of environmental science, energy and climate change.

This is a chance to be part of a team that has become a leader in deep reporting on climate change accountability and energy issues. ICN aims to expand our current staff of 17 in the next few years to more fully cover climate and energy in every region of the country.

We prize accuracy, creativity, clarity, flexibility, adherence to deadlines, good news judgment and a strong work ethic. An ability to excel in the culture of an entrepreneurial and collaborative news organization is a must.

About ICN:

Founded in 2007, InsideClimate News is an independent, non-profit, non-partisan news organization that covers climate change, clean energy, carbon energy, nuclear energy and environmental science—plus the territory in between where law, policy and public opinion are shaped. Already one of the largest environmental newsrooms in the country, ICN is committed to establishing a permanent national reporting network, to training the next generation of journalists, and to strengthening the practice of environmental journalism.

Our operation is largely virtual, with hubs in New York, Washington, D.C., and Boston, and staff from California to Maine. Our newsroom has always been driven by self-starters. We are staffed by professional journalists, many of whom bring decades of experience from leading media organizations, including The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, ProPublica, Los Angeles Times, The Washington Post and Frontline. Others come from top programs for science writing and investigative journalism, among other backgrounds. Good ideas propel the operation, wherever they originate.

We have a supportive culture of collaboration and high standards of professionalism. At our core, we are motivated by accountability journalism and storytelling that has impact and serves the public interest.

We have earned national recognition for our work and many of the most prestigious awards in journalism, including the Pulitzer Prize for National Reporting and finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for Public Service. For more, please see:
