Manages daily editorial operations and assists in providing oversight of the Georgia News Lab. Plans and develops investigative projects and edits stories and opinion columns. Assists with long-term regional and national reporting projects. Assists in developing and guiding weekly reporting plans. Assists senior editor in all aspects of department publications.


  • Responsible for assigned publication editing (i.e. daily stories and opinion column)
  • Plans, develops, guides and executes investigative projects meeting established department goals
  • Coordinates projects with professional partners
  • Works with freelance reporters
  • Assists in developing and guiding weekly reporting plans and meetings for students and professional partners
  • Assists with long-term regional and national reporting projects
  • Mentors and trains student journalists in journalism processes and protocols
  • Advises and assists with student placement in investigative internships, fellowships and employment
  • Assists in the publication of the Juvenile Justice Information Exchange (JJIE) and Youth Today
  • Coordinates coverage with the bureau chief in New York and assists with coordination and execution of short-term reporting projects
  • Coordinates with national photographers and videographers who support reporters by producing standalone videos and photo essays



Continued employment is contingent upon availability of grant funding for this position.

  • Able to proofread and properly edit submissions
  • Able to participate in editorial meetings with students and professional partners
  • Knowledge of proper investigative reporting protocols
  • Able to deal with multiple tasks or projects at one time meeting assigned deadlines
  • Excellent interpersonal, initiative, teamwork, problem solving, independent judgment, organization, communication (verbal and written), time management, project management and presentation skills
  • Proficient with computer applications and programs associated with the position (i.e. Microsoft Office suite)
  • Strong attention to detail and follow up skills
  • Strong customer service skills and phone and e-mail etiquette



  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution of higher education in journalism, communications, or related field



  • Five (5) years of professional journalism experience as reporter or editor


  • Familiarity with investigative reporting, data journalism, child welfare, criminal justice or health/science reporting preferred
