Primary Objective of Position

Trip wizard wanted. Do you love wilderness and inspiring people to get out hiking and camping? Can you tell a good trip by looking at a map? Do you know what every other online source for hiking trips is missing?

BACKPACKER, the premier brand in wilderness travel and service, is hiring an assistant editor to oversee our destinations coverage. This role will be responsible for executing a cross-platform content plan, including print, digital, social media, and video. Successful applicants will have a demonstrated aptitude in writing and editing, digital savvy, a passion for helping readers discover new areas to hike and camp, a certain poetry to their prose, and a bottomless well of ideas. This full-time position is based in our offices in Boulder, Colorado, and benefits include medical, dental, vision, and 401(k). Professional Responsibilities

The Assistant Editor will assign and edit the Play List department for the magazine, develop trips-related content for distribution on digital channels, social media, and video. In addition, the Assistant Editor will be expected to spend time in the field keeping up with new trends in techniques and equipment in our sport.


Professional Qualifications

Professional demeanor is a must for all positions at Active Interest Media. In addition to courteous, friendly, businesslike behavior, the following qualifications are fundamental to this position:

  • Must be a self-starter who is able take initiative on projects and to plan and organize their time.
  • Proven ability and skill in writing and editing.
  • Proven ability to work with others in a cooperative team effort.
  • Proven computer skills in MS Office and Adobe InDesign.
  • Proven ability to efficiently manage and organize own time.
  • Planning experience in a publishing environment desirable.


Job Conditions

Working Conditions: The Assistant Editor must be comfortable working on a computer for a standard 8-hour workday, with night- and weekend work periodically required. The applicant must also be able to carry a loaded camping backpack (30-35 pounds) for 10-15 miles in a day, and be comfortable wilderness camping.
