The Palestine Herald-Press seeks a full-time sports editor to direct sports coverage of area high school teams, as well as ensure a good mix of local sports coverage for our community newspaper and website. We want to highlight local athletes through written and video content to create compelling stories and information about our local sports teams.

The sports editor will plan coverage of area sporting events for eight high schools, as well as coverage of other youth sports. The sports editor must establish relationships with area coaches and athletic directors, as well as with student athletes.  He or she must have a general knowledge of sports and the ability to write game stories on tight deadlines. The sports editor also will recruit and schedule stringers to assist with coverage.

Ability to shoot clear and compelling photos and videos is a must. Ability to design pages using Quark is a plus. Must have valid driver's license and reliable transportation.

Experience is preferred but we will train the right person. Initiative and enterprise are essential.

The Herald-Press is a small but up-and-coming paper that has won five national awards in the last two years, including this year's Scripps Howard Award for opinion writing. You'll work hard but enjoy a congenial, flexible newsroom under a national award-winning editor.

We offer competitive benefits, as well as paid time off. Send a resume, cover letter, and work samples to Editor Jeffery Gerritt at
