Hard-hitting print journalism is not dead! It is alive and well in Indian Country and The Gallup Independent, a 12,000 afternoon daily, has an opening for a news editor/reporter hybrid position on our copy desk.
Successful applicant will be familiar with InDesign, AP Style and Macintosh computers. This position is for a news editor who will select stories from the AP wire and build news pages, copy edit stories from reporters and cover one of the largest school districts in New Mexico on a regular beat of education, general assignment and feature writing. We are a family-owned newspaper with a diverse 16-person newsroom. Gallup, New Mexico, is located in the heart of Indian Country at 6,500 feet sandwiched between the Zuni Mountains and the Chuska Mountains in the Rio Puerco valley. Amazing opportunities for cultural enrichment in an area that offers mountain biking, hiking and cross-country skiing in winter. Salary starts at $28K, for a work week of Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and includes mileage, paid vacation, sick leave and paid holidays. Health, dental and vision insurance available.
