Description:

The Editorial Assistant works with the Diabetes Forecast team to produce six issues of the magazine each year, in print and digitally. The Editorial Assistant oversees reader mail, complimentary issue mailings, the Reader Panel, product and image call-ins, social media posting, and other organizational and administrative duties for Diabetes Forecast and other American Diabetes Association (ADA) content teams. He or she will assist editors and writers in additional reporting, fact-checking, or other needs. Skilled candidates will have the opportunity to write various articles for the print magazine and its website, plus the Diabetes Forecast monthly e-newsletter.

Specific Duties

  • Oversee all of Diabetes Forecast’s reader mailboxes, responding to reader emails, and/or sending emails to the proper contacts within the ADA for additional information. Practice good customer service and represent the magazine by providing helpful, courteous information. Assist Senior Editor with selection of reader letters and essay submissions for the Reply All, Hacks, and Reflections sections of the magazine.
  • Assist editors and other ADA staff with various administrative tasks, including management of the Diabetes Forecast Reader Panel; mailing complimentary issues to sources; maintaining spreadsheets for issue requests, image/product call-ins and returns, etc.; calling in products and images for photo shoots and design; confirming quotes and facts and/or corresponding with sources; selecting Diabetes Forecast content to be used elsewhere in the ADA; coordinating review processes with Associate Director Healthy Living Content and ensure review deadlines are met
  • Assist editors with proofing of designed files to spot discrepancies between editors’ markups and revised pages. Work with managing editor to ensure editors’ marks are correctly translated to the page.
  •  Research, write, and report various articles per issue for print and web. Write the Diabetes Forecast monthly e-newsletter.
  • Work alongside various members of the ADA, including the Associate Director Healthy Living Content, to help repurpose Diabetes Forecast content for products, such as health care supplements and various websites, such as Living With Type 2 and Food Hub. Fact-check information to ensure it’s up to date and accurate, and assist with gathering resources such as images, additional quotes, etc.
  • Post to Twitter and Facebook on behalf of Diabetes Forecast several times each week. 

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism and/or related scientific field
  • Editorial experience (internship or assistant position) at magazine or consumer website preferred
  • Very strong organizational skills
  • Ability to multitask, prioritize, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to interact positively and professionally with readers, sources, and others within the American Diabetes Association
  • Skilled in Microsoft Word and Excel, and Google Sheet
