General Summary:
Seattle Pacific University's Response and Voices editor is responsible for the content and quality of the online and award-winning print version. Through excellent storytelling, photography, and design, Response and Voices seeks to convey the University's vision for "engaging the culture and changing the world" by serving as an informed and intelligent voice for Christian engagement. Clearly articulated, this vision supports SPU's business goals, motivating constituents to enroll, refer a student, give a financial gift, and/or attend an event.

Working with University Communications leadership and the Editorial Advisory Board, the editor develops content and policy that reflects major University news, initiatives, and events. This individual provides subject expertise and contacts that allow him or her to shape an article's direction with the writer. The editor oversees the visuals and content of feature stories, assigns articles for freelance and in-house writers, and edits writing. The editor also oversees the production schedule, photography assignments, proofing, corrections, and printing and mailing arrangements. A contributing editor provides writing and editing support.

Working with support from the University Communications team, the Response and Voices editor should guide online magazine content creation and strategy, exhibiting a strong understanding of digital content best practices.

Job Description:


  • The Response Editor possesses a strong commitment to understanding dynamics of difference; building relationships with students and faculty/staff of ethnically diverse backgrounds and developing culturally responsive communications designed to improve the quality of SPU messaging to relevant core audiences.
  • Writes and edits articles for Response and SPU Voices and coordinates editing process (print and online).
  • Coordinates writing assignments and content for the print issues -- as well as exclusive online content -- of Response, including the recruitment and hiring of freelance writers as needed.
  • Works with design agency to make design, photography, and illustration decisions.
  • Coordinates the distribution of proofs to all appropriate parties and oversees the correction process for each print issue.
  • Prepares, distributes, and ensures the timely completion of a detailed production schedule for two print issues and SPU Voices content. Manages magazine and Voices budget.
  • Supervises editorial assistant.
  • Crafts content and strategy for social media.
  • Prepares written photography assignments.
  • Coordinates the printing and mailing arrangements for each print issue of Response.
  • Appropriately thanks participants; corresponds with readers.

  • Minimum of a bachelor's degree in journalism, English, humanities, communications or a related field.
  • Five years of progressively responsible experience as a magazine or publications editor, and online media.
  • Demonstrated professional experience and skill in magazine/feature writing; demonstrated content-editing and fact-checking skills; demonstrated knowledge of design, printing, photography, and illustration; demonstrated copy-editing skills and familiarity with AP style.
  • Demonstrated experience in print publication production management; demonstrated experience in online publication writing, editing, and/or development; knowledge of news values and SEO as applied to online content marketing.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills; even temperament; the ability to create effective partnerships/collaborations within the department and across the University; multi-cultural competency; an affinity for accuracy and detail; effective resource management skills.
  • A commitment to SPU's vision and the ability to express it creatively through a print and online magazine.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office products including Outlook, Word and Excel, experience with WordPress.
  • Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign), CMS skills a plus.

    Additional Information:
    Position will remain open until filled. Desired start date: July 15, 2019.

    Salary: DOE

    This is a full time position with excellent benefits. SPU pays the employee premium for medical, dental, and vision insurance. SPU makes contributions to an employee HSA account and to a retirement account after one year of eligibility in the plan.
