The Indianapolis Star, part of Gannett Inc. and the USA TODAY NETWORK, has an immediate opening for a Content Coach with expertise in digital and print journalism as well as mobile, social media and video strategy, overseeing a team of 5-6 reporters who cover Hamilton County and Education.

Hamilton County is a key coverage area for IndyStar. It is located directly north of Indianapolis and is one of the fastest-growing counties in the state. It also is the wealthiest county in the state and includes the city of Carmel, which consistently ranks near the top of various lists of the best places to live in the US. This is an engaged and sophisticated audience that is deeply interested in education, culture, things to do and how city leaders spend tax money.

Growth -- everything from housing prices to commute times to retail development to classroom sizes -- is a significant topic of conversation. 

In addition, this position directs our education coverage -- another priority.

You will be joining a newsroom with a reputation for producing significant award-winning journalism at the local, state and national level. It is also a newsroom that is collaborative and innovative.

The Content Coach will work with reporters and visual journalists to ensure our storytelling reaches our target audiences. The ideal candidate will have a track record of guiding innovative daily and enterprise stories and know how to balance the urgency of breaking news with planning for sophisticated follow-up storytelling.

Responsibilities:

  • Emphasize front-end editing on every story.

  • Make daily content decisions based on news judgment, reporter input and insights from audience metrics.

  • Guide the newsroom in ensuring a steady flow of high-quality content to provide the right elements on the right platforms at the right time.

  • Coordinate and supervise coverage of major breaking news events.

  • Lead team discussions to identify projects that serve readers.

  • Uphold the highest journalism standards across digital and print platforms.

  • Increase journalistic quality and storytelling across all areas of coverage.

  • Oversee the programming, production, packaging and promotion of newsroom content across various digital platforms, with an emphasis on mobile platforms. 

Requirements:

·Bachelor's or master’s degree in Communications, Journalism, Marketing or related field preferred or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

·Five years of media management experience.

·Command of media law and principles of ethical conduct.

·Proven proficiency in applying analytics to content strategy.

·Must embrace peer-to-peer training, as a both a teacher and student.

·Experience with advanced storytelling techniques on multiple platforms.

·Strong line-editing skills.

·Exceptional planning and organizational skills.

·Understanding use of metrics, social-media and SEO knowledge.

·Self-motivation and self-direction.

·Strong grasp of journalism skills (reporting and editing) and advanced knowledge of writing, spelling, grammar, AP and local style.

·Able to multi-task and excel under intense deadline pressure in a rapidly changing environment.

·Applies innovative, creative thinking to support the company’s goals.

·News often requires employees to work extended hours, evenings, weekends and holidays, sometimes unexpectedly.
A valid drivers license, reliable transportation with liability insurance is required for this position.
