About CPJ

Founded in 1981, the Committee to Protect Journalists is an independent, non-profit organization defending journalists worldwide without regard to their political ideology. Through its work to safeguard journalists, CPJ protects the rights of all people to have access to diverse and independent sources of information.

Background

The Committee to Protect Journalists is seeking a part-time, freelance correspondent with knowledge of Brazil and a particular focus on the intersection of technology and press freedom in Latin America, to work with its Central and South America (CSA) program.

The Brazil/Latin America Tech correspondent will independently research, report, and document attacks on the press in Brazil and develop strong working relationships with local press freedom and digital rights organizations, individual reporters and sources in the relevant countries. The correspondent will also cover threats that journalists in the region face from surveillance, online censorship, poor corporate practices on privacy and security, and government policies that could hurt the free flow of information on the internet.

The ideal candidate will have passion for and knowledge of press freedom, human rights and technology in Brazil and more broadly throughout Latin America. The correspondent will have extensive familiarity with regional press freedom and digital rights issues, experience as an advocate, the ability to report breaking news and to produce in-depth reports.

Demonstrated research, reporting, and writing skills, a strong network of contacts within the region and the ability to work independently are a must. Familiarity with safety issues for journalists in the region is an asset.

Candidates must be based full-time in Brazil.

Scope of Work:

  • Research, reporting, and writing in English and Portuguese.

  • Pitching and filing written submissions (news alert, blog entry, or letter) on press freedom and technology issues, for distribution and publication on CPJ’s website.

  • Research on individual journalists and filing assistance requests within the framework of CPJ’s Journalist Assistance Program.

  • Monitoring digital rights and security concerns as they affect journalists in the region.

  • Compiling a year-end list of journalists killed in Brazil and monitoring developments in cases of killed journalists for annual impunity analysis.

  • Maintaining open communication with the CSA and editorial teams in New York and Miami.

  • Occasional travel.

Language: Fluency in English and Portuguese is essential; any additional relevant language skills are an asset.

Writing test: The successful candidate will have to pass a writing test.

This is a one-year, part-time consultancy.
