Description:

Poynter is creating a one-year ethics fellowship that will be a signature component of our newly created Craig Newmark Center for Ethics and Leadership.  We’re looking for an experienced journalist who is passionate about elevating the practice of journalism through researching, writing about and even teaching the work of journalistic ethics. During the fellowship you will be involved in writing ethics policies for organizations, and dive into some of the most interesting and thorny issues facing both journalists and the citizens they serve. When the year is up, it is our hope you will share this experience with your news organization and others, including members of your community. We anticipate this being a career development opportunity for an accomplished and experienced journalist. We’ll match your current salary (up to $90,000) and work with your boss to make sure the fellowship will be helpful to your employer. You’ll have the full support of The Poynter Institute and a small budget to travel and do research.

A typical week will have you dropping into a seminar here at Poynter or traveling to another newsroom to do ethics workshops, fielding calls from journalists who need advice on a story, writing regularly for our media news web site Poynter.org and of course working on your own research.

Requirements:

  • Significant experience in professional journalism
  • Clean and clear writer
  • Ability to identify ethical issues
  • Willingness to embrace and teach a clear process for making ethical decisions
  • Comfort with public speaking
  • Skills at creating teaching materials, including but not limited to presentation slides
  • Comfort with travel

To apply, please send a resume, a proposal for an ethics research project and two letters of reference to hiring@poynter.org. In your proposal (not to exceed 750 words) describe an ethical problem you would like to tackle and how you would set about researching the issue, solving the problem, and applying solutions.
