Description:

The National Press Club Journalism Institute is hiring a Director of Operations to establish consistent grant funding and administration, and to build outcome-driven, data-informed systems for donor management and for sustained excellence in our programming and press freedom work. The Director of Operations will help ensure that the Institute’s strategy, planning and decision-making align for documented effectiveness and high-priority impact. This will require creating and implementing evaluation processes, analyzing results, recommending improvements, and providing logistical support.

Responsibilities include:

  • Identify the most promising grant opportunities, write grant proposals that reflect program realities and goals, oversee grant administration, manage documentation, ensure programs comply with grant mandates, steward grant funders to ensure consistent communication, collect and contribute program narratives for grant applications and development initiatives;
  • Manage donations; Research and recommend CRM software and systems to use for development and fundraising; track people through a giving funnel and identify patterns for greater engagement with the Institute, including email appeals and other donor touchpoints;
  • Create programmatic measurement tools, oversee data collection, and effectively evaluate outcomes; Implement a system for tracking program signups, participation and satisfaction to include quantitative assessment and testimonials, for a database of numbers and anecdotes that can be used to describe the path to participation and engagement and to demonstrate impact; this can be done as part of the CRM software or separately;
  • Translate data into a dashboard and visualizations that can be easily accessed and used by staff, board and committees for decision-making and sharing with external audiences (donors, partners, etc);
  • Provide logistical support for programming, from booking rooms, A/V and banquet needs to arranging coverage and documentation for the Annual Report;
  • Build a database of potential speakers and teachers that reflects the diverse constituents media represents;
  • Track progress toward outcomes as defined by the Institute’s strategic plan;
  • Answer research questions and provide general library support as needed;
  • Support awards and scholarship programs and fundraising events;
  • Coordinate materials for marketing and communications, especially the Annual Report
  • Maintain the Institute’s compliance with laws and regulations, audit and improve our systems for managing materials and information, and manage the library and office environment;
  • Manage office administration, handling mail intake, conference room bookings, and equipment check-out;
  • Attend and assist with events as needed.

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Successful grant writing experience
  • Familiarity with nonprofit administration
  • Comfort with data collection and analysis
  • Demonstrated organizational skills and project management experience, including event planning
  • Ability to take initiative, work on multiple projects simultaneously, and see projects through to completion
