Radio Broadcaster, Radio Sawa Iraq

The Middle East Broadcasting Networks, Inc. (MBN) is seeking a Radio Broadcaster for our Radio Sawa Iraq stream at Headquarters office in Springfield, VA.  MBN is a non-profit grantee of the federal government that directly communicates with the people of the Middle East and North Africa through television, radio, and digital media.  MBN's mission is to provide objective, accurate, and relevant news and information to the people of the Middle East about the region, the world.

The Radio Broadcaster is responsible for generating story ideas, planning, researching and drafting original broadcast-quality news scripts for assigned stories ensuring accuracy, balance and objectivity; broadcasting the news and other programs in a balanced, accurate and objective manner. The Radio Broadcaster is also responsible for serving as a host and interviewer for live, call-in, radio programs.

 The primary duties and responsibilities of the Radio Broadcaster include, but are not limited to:

  • Announcing live newscasts and daily news magazine.
  • Conceiving, planning, researching and drafting original broadcast-quality news scripts for review by the editor that integrate wire-service stories, interviews, correspondent reports, and other input within the tight deadlines required by the twice-hourly timing of newscasts and headlines.
  • Serving as host of live, long-form radio programs.
  • Interviewing on-air guests in an informative and compelling way.
  • Creating pre-produced audio programs.
  • Melding sound judgment regarding the range, content and accuracy of scripts; balance in the inclusion of multiple points of view; and a well-paced style, into a listenable program.
  • Monitoring news-wires, feeds, stringer reports and other news input throughout the shift to keep on top of the news flow.
  • Using proper interview techniques, conduct radio interviews in Arabic with a range of sources involved in political, economic, scientific, cultural, and other activities. Identify persons to interview and issues to cover to ensure a balanced program. Select those audio cuts that are most pertinent and interesting and compose a completed text integrating actualities to enhance the final piece.
  • Coordinating story themes with correspondents in the field as directed by the Shift Editor.
  • Following political, economic, military and cultural developments affecting the broadcast region, including the evolution of US and international policies.
  • Working quickly under pressure to produce news reports of the highest professional quality to meet fixed deadlines determined by the 24-hour broadcast schedule.
  • Preparing reports.
  • Translating and adapting complex English texts into idiomatic Arabic; Adapt English interviews and tapes for Arabic Broadcasts.

Candidates are required to have:

  • Bachelors Degree in journalism or broadcast journalism is preferred
  • 3-5 years news broadcasting experience.
  • Ability to  ad-lib during breaking news and ability to handle on-air problem.
  • Clear pronunciation in Modern Standard Arabic, strong English communication skills.
  • Strong conversational skills.
  • Strong on-air presence and personality required to broadcast material.
  • Previous experience hosting live, call-in program desired.
  • Ability to work quickly under pressure to produce news reports of the highest professional quality to meet fixed deadlines determined by the 24-hour broadcast schedule.
  • Demonstrate skills and experience in interviewing in a live setting.
  • Familiarity with digital tools and trends.
  • Ability to operate as a team member, sharing responsibilities in all aspects of broadcasting including translation/adaptation and announcing as appropriate and assigned.
  • Solid news judgment.
  • A working knowledge of the big stories of the day.
  • Knowledge of journalistic ethics and libel laws.
  • Ability to accommodate flexible work schedule to support 24/7 news environment. This may require overnight coverage.
  • Technical ability to operate broadcasting equipment.
