Description:

The Post and Courier is looking for an honest, engaging and readable critic to cover the growing and thriving arts community of Charleston, South Carolina.  Oscar Wilde argued that criticism is an art in itself, and we believe that. This is a new position for The Post and Courier. It was created out of our passion and commitment for the visual and performing arts in the Lowcountry, South Carolina and the South.

We are looking someone who is equally comfortable discussing and responding to visual art, music and theatre and examining the ways it intersects with culture, business and acts as a mirror for our broader community.

This is not an entry level position. This is an incredible opportunity for someone with a proven track record of thrilling readers and growing audience around the arts. The ideal candidate is a creative, compelling writer with a strong voice who would add layers of understanding for Charleston’s experienced collectors, viewers and audience members. We want a critic conversant in the artistic debates of the day and able to translate that into real dialogue that impacts our local audience.

The Post and Courier is a Pulitzer Prize-winning newspaper with an ownership that is investing in journalism, adding several new positions as part of a strategic expansion.

The Post and Courier is one of the few independent, family-owned newspapers left in the United States. Our local owners have deep roots in the community and care deeply about this newspaper and its reputation.

If you want to join our team as an arts critic, send your resume, clips and a cover letter to Managing Editor Autumn Phillips at aphillips@postandcourier.com.

The Post and Courier is a drug-free and equal opportunity employer.

The Post and Courier is committed to building a diverse newsroom that reflects the people it covers and the audience it serves. Candidates are encouraged to highlight new perspectives they can bring to our team.
