California  Magazine is an award-winning general-interest quarterly magazine published by the Cal Alumni Association. Winner of CASE Circle of Excellence Awards for College and University General Interest Magazines in 2010, 2011, 2012, 2015, and 2017, California reports on politics, culture, science, technology, economics, literature and the arts, with UC Berkeley as its source of context and inspiration. California Online delivers timely web-exclusive news stories and features as well as serving as the online home of California magazine.

Summary: Under the general direction of the Editor-in-Chief, the Deputy Editor helps manage the editorial staff of the print magazine in the preparation, production, and delivery of California. Additionally, the Deputy Editor collaborates closely with the Online Editor to produce the best possible digital presence for the magazine.

Location: This position is located in our offices in Berkeley, CA. CAA is located at the Alumni House on the University of California, Berkeley campus. CAA is an independent not-for-profit, 501(c)(3).

 

Responsibilities: 

MANAGEMENT/ADMINISTRATIVE

Under the supervision of the Editor in Chief, provide leadership and direction to the print editorial staff, which includes a Managing Editor, two contractors (Design Director and Design Associate), as well as fact checkers and part-time work-study employees.

Oversee all stories written by the Senior Associate Editor that go into the print publication. The Deputy Editor will also contract, as needed, the services of freelance contributors.

Monitor the operating budget of the print publication and the time of staff, freelancers and interns to meet deadlines, while also serving, when necessary, as a liaison to the general public, alumni, professional and volunteer staff, and professional organizations. 

 

EDITORIAL

In consultation with the Editor-in-Chief, staff, and others, the Deputy Editor will conceive of feature stories and other editorial content, then direct staff to produce that content, working closely with writers and with the Design Director on format, design and “flow” of the content. Alongside staff, the Editor proofs and writes headlines and captions, and approves final edits of every page in every issue. 

The Deputy Editor is responsible for maintaining and striving to expand a dependable network of talented contributors (writers, photographers, artists, etc.) in the Bay Area and beyond, who can be called upon to collaborate in the creation of an editorial product of the highest quality.  

Required Qualifications: 

This position requires the ability to operate independently and collaboratively. 

Knowledge of and experience in magazine publishing. 

A minimum of 5-years of professional writing, editing, and supervising staff.

Familiarity with other publications to assure the timeliness and relevance of the magazine.

Excellent computer skills, especially word processing.

Must be able to work with a diverse group of people.

Ability to work collaboratively and respectfully with a team.

Flexibility in schedule to work occasional evenings and weekends.

Submit to and pass Consumer Report and FBI/DOJ background check investigations.

Possess valid CA driver’s license, clean driving record.

Preferred Qualifications: 

Experience with online publishing platforms and multimedia storytelling.

Experience with social media and online content promotion and dissemination.  

Knowledge of CAA policies, standards, and philosophy.  

Familiarity with the culture and history of UC Berkeley.

Salary and Benefits: 

This is a full-time exempt position. The salary range is $65,000 - 75,000 annualized and is eligible to participate in our CAA sponsored benefit plans.  CAA offers an excellent health care and generous paid time-off benefits, supplemental benefits package, 403(b), and more.
