The Research Department of the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond has an immediate opening for an Economics Writer.

 

The Economics Writer proposes and writes analytical articles for the Richmond Fed’s quarterly economics magazine, Econ Focus; a monthly essay series, Economic Briefs; and other publications. We’re looking for someone with a firm grasp of economic theory and current public policy issues, an ability to understand and interpret economic research, and excellent writing skills to work on a highly collaborative team of writers and editors. The position often involves translating complex ideas in an accessible manner for a nontechnical audience. Salary and benefits are competitive. The position is located in the Bank’s riverfront headquarters building in Richmond, Va.

Essential Job Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

  • Propose and write articles using economic analysis for Econ Focus and the Economic Brief series.
  • Develop articles largely independently based on the current state of economic research on a topic, incorporating input from economists and editors.
  • Complete occasional ad hoc writing assignments for other publications produced by the Research Department, such as the Annual Report, conference summaries, articles for members of the Bank's senior management, and internal briefings.
  • Collaborate with editors and economists on revisions to writer’s articles.
  • Create charts in Excel as appropriate to accompany articles, requiring skill in the appropriate interpretation of data.
  • Keep abreast of evolving economic and public policy issues in the nation and Fifth District.

Qualifications/Experience:

  • Undergraduate degree in economics or a related field (required). Graduate degree in economics or a related field is advantageous.
  • Three or more years of relevant work experience writing about economic and public policy issues for a lay audience.
