Tired of hearing people opine about the demise of the newspaper industry? Well, The Post and Courier is adding several new positions as part of a strategic expansion. We’re looking for a kick-ass journalist to join a talented, hard-working investigations/projects team that proves every day just how vital newspapers still are.

Because of our work, South Carolina’s beleaguered school system stands to get its first major overhaul in decades. Women have greater protections from domestic violence. Officer-involved shootings are more thoroughly investigated. And a powerful prosecutor has been forced from office and indicted on fraud and embezzlement charges.

Help us add to this list.

The Post and Courier, winner of the 2015 Pulitzer Prize for Public Service and a two-time 2016 Pulitzer finalist, is looking for a new member to expand its four-person public service/watchdog team. There aren’t many jobs left as good as this one. While corporate consolidation and hedge fund ownership have pushed too many news organizations toward damaging shifts in the traditional journalism paradigm, we are investing in improving our offerings and building stronger relationships with our readers.

At The Post and Courier, we don’t believe in comforting the comfortable. In an age where power is increasingly being abused, we’re in the affliction business.

To put it simply: We want a hungry and talented journalist with demonstrated success on mid-range and long-term investigative projects. You could be a data geek, a hard-nosed take-no-prisoners reporter, a storyteller, or all of that and more. While we do have gaps in our game that we’d like to fill, our first priority (always) is to find talented people and hire them. What will move you to the top of our list:

•             Javascript, Python, API, Excel, Access, MySql: These are things that get you excited and you can actually use them.

•             You have a keen eye for compelling stories that haven’t been told; stories that make a real difference in people’s lives.

•             You still have the fierce, competitive edge of the underdog.

•             You enjoy coaching and working with less experienced but enthusiastic journalists.

Who are we? The Post and Courier is one of the few independent, family-owned newspapers left in the United States. Our local owners have deep roots in the community and care deeply about this newspaper and its reputation.

Better yet, that ownership translates into a growing newspaper that is adding staff and expanding its footprint in South Carolina. Yes, you read that right. We’re our state’s largest newspaper and we’re looking to grow. And we realize the best way to do that is to be relentlessly interesting and provide rock- solid content that people can’t get anywhere else.

On the digital side, we’re aggressively pushing every digital boundary you can imagine. No idea is too crazy or too big.

We are fortunate to live in a truly beautiful place that has great beaches and world-class restaurants. But South Carolina also has no shortage of challenges and compelling storylines that will keep even the most intrepid reporter busy for years on end.

If you think you fit the bill, send a resume, clips and a cover letter to Watchdog & Public Service Editor Glenn Smith at The Post and Courier is a drug-free and equal opportunity employer.

The Post and Courier is committed to building a diverse newsroom that reflects the people it covers and the audience it serves. Candidates are encouraged to highlight new perspectives they can bring to our team.
