U.S. Catholic magazine seeks an experienced Managing Editor to lead a collaborative editorial, design and production team.  This position is responsible for ensuring the quality of the content and design and timely and cost-effective production of the magazine and online products.  Responsibilities include all aspects of planning, writing, editing, designing, and producing this publication.  The Managing Editor also collaborates with marketing to ensure that the publication continues to meet the needs of its target audience, and is responsible for continually seeking ways to expand the target audience. As Managing Editor, this position has full control over the US Catholic budget.

Main Accountabilities Include:

  • Ensure quality of content and design as required through effective management of staff and external resources.
  • Ensure cost-effective and timely production by developing and managing schedules and continually seeking ways to control costs.
  • Expand and reinforce the reach and mission of the print publication through a vibrant online presence at
  • Increase the visibility and circulation through coordination with Marketing and Communications.
  • Ensure ample external writing resources by establishing and maintaining contacts with authors, reviewing manuscripts, and negotiating contracts with external authors as necessary.
  • Provide mechanisms for evaluating product to ensure that it meets both the needs of its readers and professional standards
  • Select, motivate, and develop staff.
  • Keep abreast of trends in the magazine industry, readership, theology, and the Catholic faith. Network with religious publishing peers (through ICF, ACP, and CPA).


B.A. in English, Journalism, and/or the humanities with knowledge of theology and the Catholic faith required.  10 years of experience as a magazine editor with significant management experience.  Excellent communications skills and the ability to work in a collaborative, creative environment.
