The Standard-Examiner in beautiful Ogden, Utah has an immediate opening for a talented and versatile photojournalist.  

Ogden is a town of 85,000 located at the base of the Wasatch Mountains and is quickly becoming known as an outdoor recreation hub for its three ski resorts, mountain biking trails, two rivers, rock climbing and more. If you love the outdoors this is a great place to be.

The ideal candidate must be able to write their own stories, have strong photo and organizational skills, a keen eye for news, sports and feature photographs, the ability to work well with reporters and editors and be able to write clean, clear cutlines. Candidates should be confident in their ability to work independently in a variety of situations and be a problem solver, and should hold themselves accountable to photojournalism ethics.

The right candidate must be able to generate story ideas that utilize great photography for the newspaper and website, and have knowledge of both studio, portrait and location lighting situations, knowledgeable about current digital technology and applications for smartphone photography. Reliable transportation is required.

Daily duties include working Tuesday-Saturdays in afternoons/evenings with a significant amount of sports coverage and evening/weekend news. Knowledge of Photoshop and other photo software, such as Adobe Lightroom or Photo Mechanic, is required. The duties include shooting photos, generating online galleries, some writing and helping coordinate freelance photographers when needed. Candidate will be required to do at least two in-depth photo stories per month (including photos and writing).

The Standard-Examiner has a Sunday circulation of over 30,000, with a growing emphasis on digital platforms, as well as multiple special editorial publications throughout the year — a high school sports preview, college sports preview, dining magazine, and other seasonal projects — printed as tabloids and magazines.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Photojournalism or equivalent

  • Minimum 1-2 years photojournalism experience
