The Independent, an award-winning weekly publication covering southern Rhode Island, is seeking a part-time general assignment reporter to join our newsroom. This position requires a strong writer – attentive to detail and committed to accuracy – who can successfully cover important stories from town government, and can also produce relevant, compelling features from our thriving oceanside communities.

The successful candidate will have a grasp of journalism techniques including the ability to cultivate sources, generate his or her own story ideas, use AP style and write accurate, unbiased copy. Candidates should be willing and able to take photos as needed.

A bachelor's degree is required, as is reliable transportation. Some newspaper reporting experience is preferred, but recent graduates are encouraged to apply. The position will require some night and weekend work covering town meetings and other assignments.
