Description:

Do you want to be near the center of one of the biggest issues in the United States right now? We are just 25 minutes from the border with Mexico and the wall debate here is as fiery as it anywhere else. Have the opportunity to experience that debate first-hand in the Rio Grande Valley as a reporter with one of the newspapers that covers the issue.

The Valley Morning Star in Harlingen, Texas, a 12,000-circulation daily newspaper, is seeking a multi-talented, hard-working, energetic and aggressive reporter/writer to join its skilled and experienced editorial team.

The position we are seeking is crucial to our team as we embark in a direction in which reporters do a little bit of everything, including reporting on government actions, writing features, producing enterprising stories, taking photos, posting stories online and using social media to promote stories and communicate breaking news while on the scene.

We need a skilled reporter who can grab hold of his or her beats and take them to the next level. We love to have our reporters write about what's important to our readers, not just all government and politics all the time. Our readers want to know what's happening down the street. What business is going in a location, is there crime in my neighborhood, what are the most dangerous intersections in the city, is the community really growing and thriving financially, etc.

We prefer a candidate who has some previous reporting experience and understands the importance of community reporting. However, we are open to teaching and mentoring the right "futrue star" recent college graduate who has some college newspaper or reporting experience.

The ideal candidate must understand local news and be able to convey that through well written, narrative and entertaining stories and photos. Candidates also should be digital savvy, employing social media in an effort to build and retain readers and viewers alike.

We will teach some of these skills to the right candidate, but the key is to have strong news reporting and writing abilities, have a desire to be part of a team, as well as the understanding of what makes a community newspaper thrive.

If this sounds like a good fit for you, and you have the desire to learn and improve your abilities for the next level while helping make the Valley Morning Star the best it can be, you may be the perfect candidate we are looking for.

We offer the potential of having your stories and photos published in our other newspapers and specialty products. We also offer benefits such as 401K matching, health insurance, life insurance, dental insurance as well as paid vacations and holidays. We also have growth opportunities within the company through our Valley newspaper group.

To apply, send your resume, a cover letter and 3 to 5 clips (we're looking for enterprise, breaking news and well-written features) via email to editor
