A media startup is taking shape in the Rust Belt and it needs an inaugural editor-in-chief. If you’re an experienced wordsmith who dreams of molding the voice of a truly great media company and magazine — one that’s as focused on narrative journalism and investigations as it is on politics and the best restaurants, music, art, literature and sport in a region — then this is for you.

Some background: Among the 10 major cities in the U.S. with the fastest-growing populations of millennials, half are in the Rust Belt. These cities are hotbeds of activity, filled with ambitious people starving for exactly what we give them: Great stories from some of the best journalists in the country, and practical advice from people who’ve built meaningful lives, communities, and businesses. We've got just about everything in place for this preeminent upstart media outlet: A solid sales team; already-established connections to audio, video, and print journalists with bonafides at The New York Times, Esquire, TIME, NBC News, NPR, and many other outlets; and designers who have built newspapers, magazines, websites, and campaigns for some of the most noteworthy brands in the nation.

But we still need one thing. We need an editor-in-chief to help us craft our voice. We need you.

Ideally, you:

  • Have varied interests and unbound curiosities;

  • Are endlessly fascinated by people and their stories — and how to tell those stories in the most effective and engaging ways possible;

  • Are familiar with great regional magazines such as Texas Monthly, California Sunday Magazine, Sunset, and Garden&Gun;

  • Have assigned stories to freelancers and brought those stories through the editorial process to publication;

  • Have worked with designers and photographers to make sure visuals and copy are equally top-notch, engaging, and effective;

  • Have produced stories using audio and visual media;

  • Are a copyediting stickler;

  • Can build a bulletproof fact-checking process;

  • Have filed and followed through on public records requests;

  • Have worked with WordPress and InDesign;

  • Can bring occasional levity to a content stable that can range from serious to personal to aspirational and beyond;

  • Have knowlege of — and/or reporting experience in — the Rust Belt and/or Greater Appalachia.

The job will primarily involve overseeing a weekly newsletter, daily content updates, and a bimonthly magazine. The position is based in Pittsburgh to start. Relocation expenses are negotiable.

Does this sound like you? If so, send an email to editor@postindustrial.com explaining why you're right for the job and what you bring to the table. Please attach a resume, too.

We know you're out there — our new editor-in-chief. We look forward to hearing from you.
