At the Los Angeles Times and San Diego Union-Tribune we have entered the next chapter and are investing in the future of journalism. We are looking for a Newsletter and Messaging Product Lead to evolve our digital offering. This product manager will collaborate with cross-functional stakeholders to drive the strategy and vision of our newsletters and messaging, focused on building loyal relationships with our readers.

The lead will work closely with editorial, business and technical teams. In addition, this manager will foster and strengthen relationships with a broader group of stakeholders, including advertising, subscriptions, events and data analytics, as well as oversee newsletters and messaging (push notifications/in-app messages) as a business to keep stakeholders informed, continually testing and iteratively releasing products to optimize key engagement metrics.

The Newsletter and Messaging Lead will use analytics, hypothesis-driven testing methods, improve upon existing offerings and oversee the launch of new newsletter and messaging products. The person in this role will inform best practices, industry trends and competitive landscape, working closely with editorial and marketing partners.

This position is based in our El Segundo, Calif., office.

Responsibilities:

  • Oversee strategic vision for newsletters, email and messaging as a product and ensure execution
  • Work closely with editorial to realize a collaborative, shared vision for newsletters and alerts and with marketing partners to evolve business-driven email communications to our readers
  • Direct existing and new newsletter activity to execute on the strategic vision
  • Ensure a consistent look and voice of newsletters and messaging, enforcing brand guidelines and strategies
  • Be the ultimate source of knowledge for newsletters and messaging and their performance metrics
  • Act as the liaison between business/product, editorial, technology, advertising and outside vendors
  • Lead requirements gathering, prioritize features, manage the scope of business requirements and keep focus on project deliverables
  • Communicate often and openly with cross-functional stakeholders so that all teams are informed on newsletter/alert status, performance metrics, future rollouts and general activity with newsletters
  • Effectively use data to make decisions
  • Define, organize and document business requirements/use cases and functional requirements for enhancements within a Scrum process
  • Work with management and stakeholders to define, analyze and report on product KPIs
  • Utilize hypothesis-driven testing methodologies to optimize performance and revenue opportunities
  • Perform other related duties and assignments as required. Travel occasionally to meet with stakeholders

Qualifications:

  • More than two years of experience working with newsletters/messaging in either a product or editorial capacity
  • Working knowledge of common tools for email and messaging (Salesforce, MailChimp, Urban Airship, etc.)
  • Ability to think strategically, gain input and buy-in from stakeholders on strategic vision and oversee execution
  • Strong and proven skills in creating quality documents such as business requirements/use cases, functional specifications, test plans and test cases
  • Good analytical and problem-solving skills to evaluate business and market problems and apply technology and domain knowledge to identify appropriate solutions
  • Ability to multitask and work self-sufficiently in a fast-paced, fluid work environment
  • Solution oriented, with the ability to think critically and creatively
  • Inspires a culture of innovation, execution, collaboration and accountability
