The Monitor is seeking to employ a full-time sportswriter to join our team of journalists covering South Texas’ Rio Grande Valley. Applicants should be self-starters who are passionate about high school sports, as well as collegiate programs, developmental and professional leagues. This individual may also work as a general assignments reporter when needed.

Journalists experienced in deadline writing, covering late-breaking stories and enterprise journalism, and who can record statistics, box scores and have a general understanding of high school, collegiate and professional sports activities and policies are encouraged to apply. A bachelor’s degree in journalism is preferred but not required, as two to five (2-5) years of experience in other newsrooms will also be considered.

Together with The Monitor sports staff, this individual will be expected to cover a region that’s home to more than 30 high school sports programs, developmental leagues and collegiate programs at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley. Range of coverage may also include hard news, policy, features and enterprise stories.

To enhance stories, additional responsibilities may include assisting in the preparation of video and audio elements for multimedia packages. Expertise in web and social media news development and management is also preferred.
