Description:

The Firewall, a new nonprofit news site dedicated to covering efforts to improve American democracy, is seeking an energetic data visualization reporter interested in money in politics, redistricting, voting rights, government ethics and other issues challenging functional governments in Washington and across the country. The data reporter conducts original research or builds on research conducted by others, utilizing innovative story-telling techniques to establish The Firewall as the leading source of news about political reform. The data reporter will develop an expertise in the subject matter, to pair with already established technical skills. The data reporter will also promote his/her work through personal social media channels and through company social media channels as directed by the publisher or editor-in-chief.

Reporting

  • Research, report and and build data presentations that tell stories and illuminate data about key issues in the political reform debate, as assigned or approved by the editor-in-chief

  • Write articles to accompany the data research

  • Write clearly and intelligently for a diverse audience of activists, the media, policymakers and the general public

  • Become an expert in the issue we are covering

  • Report with accuracy

  • Evaluate performance and prioritize ideas through analysis of digital traffic

Thought Leadership

  • Develop and cater to an influential social media following

  • Develop sources and relationships within the reform community

  • Speak on panels and at conferences relevant to The Firewall subject matter

Position Requirements:

  • 3-5 years of experience reporting on government, political reform or related industries

  • Strong interviewing, reporting and writing skills

  • Ability to spot data important to our audience and translate it into a compelling, clear visual package

  • Proficiency in modern web tools necessary to visual reporting

  • Strong organizational skills

  • Strong news judgement

  • Active social media presence

  • Self motivated with a positive and professional approach

  • Familiarity with political reform community preferred

  • Ability to shoot and edit digital video a plus
