Description:

Want to push the boundaries of visual storytelling? Do you love the challenges of creating great experiences for readers? Does the propeller on your hat spin when you jump into HTML and CSS? If so, the Los Angeles Times may have a job for you.

We’re looking for someone to lead our digital design efforts. The ideal candidate prizes great UI/UX and has a hunger to teach. Creativity and inspiration are key as we look to create distinct and engaging content verticals as we explore refining our current digital presentation.

In this position, you will:

  • Lead the design and presentation of editorial publishing on digital platforms
  • Develop innovative designs for new digital products
  • Develop and enforce digital style guidelines across our digital products
  • Collaborate with producers, reporters, editors and visual journalists to tell stories with impact
  • Work with print design to ensure brand coherence
  • Shape and edit content with readers needs in mind
  • Work on deadline and long-term projects
  • Work with our analytics teams to optimize our efforts

Requirements:

  • Sophisticated typographic skills and color use that translate across multiple digital products
  • A minimum of five years of experience as a journalist and designer in a fast-paced, high-volume daily news environment
  • A minimum of two years of experience managing a team
  • Strong working knowledge of digital analytics and reader-driven publishing
  • Expert knowledge of visual journalism and alternate story forms
  • Solid editing skills and news judgment
  • Awareness of industry best practices and innovations
  • A competitive spirit and proactive work style

If this is the kind of challenge that gets you excited, please send a cover letter, resume and 250 words describing a news vertical you love and why it works (not one of ours, please) to Len De Groot (len.degroot@latimes.com) and Michael Whitley (michael.whitley@latimes.com). This is a full-time role based in El Segundo, Calif.
